SEEING THE MIRACULOUS IN THE MUNDANE

There are only two ways to live your life—one as though nothing is a miracle and the other as though EVERYTHING is a miracle. I prefer the latter.  Albert Einstein

Take time to appreciate a sunrise.

If you have little children in your life you’ve seen the delight they have in everyday things. Our almost-two-year-old grandson, Charlie, squeals with joy every time he sees a truck. “TRUCK!”, he yells and points out the next truck as we’re driving along in the car and he spots yet another one. And Bompa seems to be one of his favorite people. So when he sees his Bompa, even though it’s ALMOST every day, there’s a big smile, a joyful running with open arms, and shouting , “BOMPA, BOMPA,BOMPA!”  He truly experiences the JOY of everyday things.

Sometimes in the hub-bub of life we don’t appreciate the simple  joys of the everyday events and people  in our lives. We don’t stop to appreciate the simple beauty of a tree. We see someone every day so we take them for granted. We simply move through the day as if nothing special is happening in our lives when in fact, there is EVERYTHING MIRACULOUS going on around us EVERY DAY! Seeing the miraculous in the mundane  is one of the secrets of a joyful life! For if you can see miracles EVERY DAY, your life will automatically be FULL OF JOY!

We need to begin seeing again with FRESH EYES! We need to see things AS IF for the FIRST TIME just as Charlie does after he’s seen the “umpteenth” truck go by! Now, I realize that we can’t keep jumping up and down every time we look at a tree in our yard( or a truck going by ) . We live on 11 wooded acres and I’d  look like a lunatic if I did that! The point I’m trying to make is that we need to stay IN APPRECIATION of all THAT IS and not take ANYTHING for granted. As Einstein prefers, we need to see everything as if it’s a miracle.

Consider  deeply the things  in nature that we take for granted and REALLY PONDER these questions. What is inside  a TINY ACORN  that  allows it to grow into a HUGE TREE?  How is it that EVERY DAY the sun comes up in the morning and  goes down in the evening in such precision that we’ll know the exact time? What makes a lowly crawly caterpillar transform itself into a beautiful flying butterfly? How can something as beautiful as the flower come up out of the dirty ground as if by magic? What AMAZES you in nature? Ponder and WONDER ANEW  as if you are seeing for the first time.

We also need to be aware of the MIRACULOUS in regards to those people who come into our lives. Whether they are long-term relationships or people we pass standing on street corners, ALL people are to be regarded as people made in the image of God and deserving of love.   The Bible tells us that we need to entertain strangers because they may be ANGELS we are serving. It also says that whatever we do to the “least of these” we are DOING UNTO GOD. We can be serving Angels or God Himself when serving others! Now THAT’S MIRACULOUS! And that also is where JOY IS!

Begin NOW to see the MIRACULOUS in the dailyness of your life… to WONDER in amazement at nature, to SEE THE POSSIBILITY OF SERVING ANGELS AND GOD when you encounter strangers and the “least of these”. BE AWARE OF THE MIRACULOUS in your daily life and be filled with JOY!

  1. Great post! This concept is very encouraging, and being reminded to look for these things is sometimes necessary because it is so easy to get caught up in just stuff, we really do miss a lot of the blessings. Thank you. ShariLee
