Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.      Victor Hugo

Laughter is to your soul as fertilizer is to the flowers in your garden. Would you like lovely robust bright blooms in your flower garden? Then fertilize them. Do you like feeling good all over?  Then laugh. Milton Berle ( remember him? ) said that laughter is an” instant vacation”. Norman Cousins said that laughter is” inner jogging”.

Are you getting enough  “instant vacations” and “inner jogging” ?  It is said that children laugh hundreds of times a day while adults laugh only a dozen times a day. We adults need to find more things to laugh about.

Yesterday my husband, Les, Elissa and Jon ( daughter and son-in-law) and I, were trying to entertain our 21 month old grandson, Charlie, by giving him a ride on Les’ golf cart. I held Charlie, Les drove, and Jon and Elissa stood in the back where the golf bags should be. ( Yeah, I know, not really safe ) Anyway, we went very slow but were acting all excited and waving our hands all around thinking we were making it fun for Charlie, yelling,”Wheee”, etc. when Jon pointed out that there were  people walking around the property who were looking at us but they probably couldn’t see little Charlie. They probably thought we were just some dorky adults whooping it up on a golf cart. Well, the idea of that got us all LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY so then we REALLY probably looked dorky!!  But you know what?  It WAS like an INSTANT VACATION! And my stomach hurt from laughing so much I’m sure it was from the” inner jogging”!

There is a growing body of scientific literature suggesting that laughter counteracts stress and is involved in resilience. According to Prof. Lee Burke of the University of California-Irvine,” If we took what we know about the medical benefits of laughter and bottled it up, it would require FDA approval.” That is how powerful laughter is on our health!  But thankfully we don’t have to have a prescription nor do we have to pay for this “medicine”. It’s FREE! Though sometimes like with our golf cart ride the” price” might be your dignity.

There are many benefits to laughter which I’ll share on Friday. In the meantime, make sure you find ways to laugh even MORE than a dozen times a day. It’s as healthy as an instant vacation, inner jogging, and the BEST MEDICINE!

  1. Great Post! I could see you guys in my mind, and I started laughing out loud! Thanks for sharing, and you are so right–laughing is a wonderful activity!
