GETTING RID OF NEGATIVE THOUGHTS – PART 1

Sow a thought, reap an action;

sow an action, reap a habit;

sow a habit, reap a character;

sow a character, reap a destiny. Unknown

Did you know that your mind works in a way similar to growing a garden? During the next 12 weeks we are going to see how this is so.

Let’s say you are going to plant a flower garden. And let’s say that you want tulips to pop up in  springtime in your garden. You want a lovely and VERY colorful garden of yellow, blue, and orange tulips!  So what do you do? Well, after you prepare and till the soil,  you dig down in the earth and make little holes in which to plant and you put in there…..what? …. TULIP BULBS, of course!  You don’t plant daffodil bulbs because you don’t want daffodils, you want TULIPS! 🙂  OK, I know this sounds obvious but bear with me . So in the springtime in your garden you know that you can expect lovely yellow, blue, and orange tulips to pop up and create for you a “carpet of tulips” to admire.

Your life works in a similar way.  Here’s how: Your THOUGHTS are the seeds or bulbs that you plant. Your MIND is the garden in which you plant them. And your LIFE becomes the result of the thoughts ( seeds or bulbs )  that you “planted” in your mind ( garden ) .

We’ll be talking about this over the summer but our topic today is “Clear Out The Weeds”. What do we mean by that? Well, in a garden weeds can grow and take over the garden. They can choke out the flowers as they extend their roots underground, grow quickly, and  crowd out the flowers. We need to pull them out so that our flowers can  grow and we’ll have the beautiful garden we desired.

Similarly the “weeds” in our lives are the NEGATIVE THOUGHTS that can grow in our minds and crowd out the beautiful thoughts. You may not have PLANTED them intentionally yet THERE THEY ARE! The negative thoughts can be worry, anxiousness, pride, anger, low self-esteem, just to name a few. If we desire a mind free of these life- draining thoughts, we need to intentionally “clear them out”!

One of the ways to do that is to first BE AWARE of them. We have to pay attention to the thoughts that are running through our minds. Much of what goes through our minds has been “programmed” in there through our past thoughts and environment. We have not intentionally thought about it, we just “absorbed” what was around us.

For example, when children grow up in an environment of adults telling them that they ” are no good, will never “BE” anybody, are worthless,etc ” they can grow up believing what they heard and in their minds they ARE “no good, worthless”. They don’t stop to think about it, it just becomes a part of who they BELIEVE they are. But the TRUTH is that EVERYONE has GREAT VALUE, and can CHOOSE to be “good”, and is ALREADY “SOMEBODY”! The lies that this child THINKS, are the “weeds” that can crowd out  the TRUTH, and GOOD THOUGHTS about himself. The lies and bad thoughts about himself are the “weeds” that need to be cleared out of his mind in order for him to have a beautiful life. We BECOME what we THINK!

So what are the “weeds” in YOUR life that need to be cleared out? The TRUTH is that we ALL have GREAT VALUE, we are made in the image of God, we are SIGNIFICANT! Begin to listen intentionally to the thoughts and beliefs running through your mind.  You are NOT your thoughts! Weed out the lies and begin to believe the TRUTH. We need to do this INTENTIONALLY as we all have thoughts going through our minds but some of them are lies and some of them will choke out the TRUTH. Did you know that we have 90,000 thoughts a day? The tragedy is that we are not AWARE of them and so they just go around and around in our minds without  us paying attention to them and THEY may be what is keeping you from becoming THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE AND THE LIFE YOU WANT TO HAVE! The Bible says to “Be transformed by the RENEWING of your MIND..” Romans 12:2.

Begin today to RENEW your mind! Become aware of the 90,000 thoughts going through your mind daily. Well, OK at least be aware of SOME of them! And compare those thoughts with the TRUTH of who you REALLY are! Clear out those “weeds” so you can have room for the BEAUTIFUL thoughts that we were meant to have. Prepare the way to grow the lovely garden in your mind which will ultimately lead to a  LOVELIER LIFE!

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious– the best, not the worst: the beautiful, not the ugly: things to praise, not things to curse. … Philippians 4:8 The Message
